Monitoring Vice News

In today's digital age, it is almost impossible to scroll through any social media platform and not see some form of digital content created by Vice Media Group. Vice's media presence is everywhere. Vice is known to a younger demographic and appeals to a young-adult digital landscape. Vice originated in Montreal in 1994 and has expanded internally into eight branches and geographically in over fifty different countries. Here are the multitude of brands, check them out they are all really interesting.

There is an overwhelming amount of brands that Vice has expanded into, therefore, I will simply monitor Vice News so that we aren't here all day.

Vice News has a massive following across many social media platforms like Twitter, with 1 million followers, Instagram with 1.2 million followers and Youtube with 7 millions subscribers. It is safe to say that they are widely consumed domestically and globally for circulating and prominent news. On Brand Mention, their outreach over the last week has reached 9 million, yet they only had 39 thousand interactions, a relatively small comparison to their outreach. Likewise, Google Trends depicts a consistent and rising pattern that seems to have climaxed during late August and early September, when the United States withdrew its troops from Afghanistan and escalated a humanitarian crisis as well as when the state of Texas upheld one of the most restrictive abortion bans in U.S. history.

Vice News interacts with the groundswell during any global or national event that attracts any form of noteworthy press, that's why their output is so inflated during moments of crisis or extremity. Their versatility across different social media platforms gives them a major advantage within communicating with the groundswell. Vice News is such a transformative and ever changing news outlet that it adapts with the news itself.

Vice News essentially campaigns when there is a pressing and urgent news line, like the events the unveiled in Afghanistan this past summer. They produced multiple series covering the Taliban's control of Afghanistan and the voices and stories of those affected by this. This series below gives audio clips of Afghani citizens and their perspectives during the upheaval.

Regarding positive and negative feedback of Vice News, it is about as mixed bag as it can get due to the political nature of the news outlet and company. Since it is such a global entity, people from all different political spectrums like to insert their two cents into any conversation or debate presented. This post right here is a perfect example of how many directions feedback and responses can go with controversial topics.

Longtime consumers of Vice feel as though the company and its branches are going in a different direction than they hoped, yet younger demographics seem to be energized and influenced by the multi-faceted landscape and carry over of Vice's digital branches. How has your interaction with Vice News or any other Vice-operated media branch been?

  1. Hi, Daniel. I didn't know about Vice News before, but later I learned about it through my mobile phone. This platform is different from other similar Twitter and Facebook, and it relies more on long videos to attract viewers. I think its success undoubtedly gives people a refreshing feeling, because I always think that people nowadays are very impetuous. I studied investment science in my undergraduate course. If one principle of investment science is applied here, people's worry about time cost will increase their expectation of profit. This means that those long videos that require people to pay longer time and cost must have at least as much excitement as short videos to gain a foothold. The important reason why Vice News is not inferior to short videos is that its themes are always closely following topics that young people are interested in, and secondly, its pages are very concise, which makes people more patient in reading long videos.

  2. Hi Dan, I really like the topic you chose. You did a really good job establishing the social media presence and usage of Vice News. The interactions with the groundswell and all of the subsets of Vice News were great to read about. I am curious to see what recommendations you will be giving to this news outlet in the second portion of the project. What do you think is the biggest weakness or threat to this organization?

Listening and Talking with the Groundswell

Our personal connotations of listening and speaking have changed exponentially in the modern digital age. The way we listen, speak, advertise and market is not the same as it used to be, thanks, in part to the groundswell. The groundswell is defined and examined by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff in their book    Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies  as "a social trend in which people use technologies to get the things they need from each other, rather than from traditional institutions like corporations" (p. 9). Chapters five and six of this book focused on listening to and speaking to the groundswell constructively.  We are approached in these chapters by the difference between shouting and talking within advertising and marketing. Li and Bernoff explain that the older forms of "shouting" in advertisement are practically useless in today's day and age. Considering most people trust a strangers opinion on a produ...
